VDS calculated state vs. data available via CAN

When the VDS on a v1.5 Roadster gets reset, it loses the following information: Charge History Energy History Trip Meter Drive Time Wh/mile history graph I take this to mean that these things are calculated from info on the CAN bus and stored in the VDS. In v1.5 Roadsters, the energy history got screwed up by a firmware update more than a year ago. The regen energy numbers shown are often ludicrous. In extreme examples, the day and month regen numbers can be larger than the net energy numbers. No doubt related to that, I see the regen number going up when the car is parked. (That's a nice trick!) I take this to mean that something on the CAN bus changed but the VDS firmware hasn't been updated. Things that are preserved over a VDS reset: Charge time, mode and current limit. (Current limit is stored by location, presumably by the VMS.) Trip distance and net energy used. So, presumably all of the values in this group can be queried from the CAN bus. Trip efficiency also persists. It may be calculated by the VDS or available on the CAN bus. My most recent trip meter showed 46.7 miles, 11.32 kWh, and 243 Wh/mile. If you do the math, 11.32 kWh / 46.7 miles = 242.398 Wh/mi, which should round to 242. Since the trip distance has been found on the bus at 0.1 mi resolution, it seems like that's the best data the VDS has. If there are higher resolution numbers somewhere (VMS?), then maybe the real values are 46.65 miles and 11.324 kWh -> 242.74 Wh/mi which rounds up to 243. So, perhaps the efficiency number is calculated elsewhere and broadcast on the CAN bus. Alternatively, the VDS either may have a higher resolution energy number than what it's showing or perhaps it just does math badly. Tom

User/Password Terminology

Almost all end-users that have given feedback have expressed confusion over the many users and passwords in the OVMS system, and which ones should be used where. Bennett has offered to help out with this, and I'm working with him. The first step is standardization of the terms. What we have agreed is as follows: Openvehicles.com Username and Password (used in iPhone App Settings, for future work, and the username is currently used when registering a car). OVMS Module Password (the password used for SMS control and Paranoid Mode encryption). OVMS Server Password (the password shared amongst the car, server and apps for authentication and encryption). Cellular Network APN, Username and Password (the APN, username and password provided by the cellular network provider and needed for GPRS). I am going to change the iPhone App to ensure that standard naming is used. I'll also work with Sonny so he can change the Android App. Bennett is going to change the manual to also reflect this change, and try to make things clearer. We'll then try to co-ordination a release of the three parts. Regards, Mark.

Badging state-of-charge

The new GreenCharge App has an interesting feature where they use the badge icon as an indication of %SOC. The example picture below represents a 75% SOC. It is an interesting approach, that I'm not sure if we should adopt. Hence, discussion: I personally don't like badge icons. They scream 'attend to me! clean me up!' and my OCD kicks in ;-) I like to keep inbox=0. There would be no way to 'clear' such a badge icon. I'm not sure if this violates Apple's user interface guidelines and/or would be enough to get rejected from the App store. More research would be needed on this. Implementation wise, it is trivial. At the server level, if SOC != lastSOC then send a PUSH notification with a new badge number = SOC%. This would only work for non-paranoid mode cars. If we wanted this to work with paranoid-mode cars, we would need to do it at the car module level with a new message type (unencrypted SOC). Easy to make it opt in/out - just enable/disable badge icons in the iPhone preferences (Settings/Notifications/OpenVehicles). Thoughts? Mark.

Leaf or US Volt

Are there any OVMS owners/developers out there who also own a Leaf or US Volt? I'm interested in the possibility of a server-side gateway to the Leaf and Volt web interfaces. We would get the info from those systems and translate it into OVMS. From the OVMS App you could then see the Leafs/Volts? It won't work for non-US Volts (something we're working on with an OVMS module in the car), but for US Volts and all Leafs it should work just fine. Does anyone know how the web APIs for those cars work? I am aware of some reverse-engineering work, but are there official APIs? Regards, Mark.

Tesla Roadster v1.5 Support

We're pleased to say that OVMS End-User firmware 1.2.2 has now been declared stable and will be provided with all new units shipping from next week onwards. The new firmware brings with it: Issue #31 - Performance mode bug fix and kludgy workaround Issue #32 - Bug in net_sms handling CARBITS feature #14 Tesla Roadster v1.5 tested compatible and supported The last one says it all. This new firmware adds support for v1.5 Tesla Roadsters. I really like the top-down view! That gets my vote without a doubt. Heck, from your demo I can even see that you're driving on the wrong side of the road!! (At least for me, being an American, it's the wrong side. In Hong Kong, I know it's the correct side.) I think the 3D effect on the map doesn't help at all, and the flipping/upside down thing is way more distracting than cool. Assuming the car icon is the same color as chosen, it'll be great. iPhone UI Request-For-Comments

Guys, I've been working on tidying and cleaning up the iPhone App, and am now looking at the Location tab. First thing I've done is revamp the code to handle location changes and support car bearing. I've also done an interface for social groups, and tidied up the object model for all this. The last step is to enable the display of cars for selected social groups. The problem is the rotation of the car, and the image perspective we use, leads to some strange upside-down appearances. I tried changing to the top-down car (as used on the "Car' tab to show TPMS, etc), but it really doesn't look nice. What do people think? Is it ok without re-doing a whole new set of images? I'm surprised the "view of the car from the top" image didn't work - that would have been my first thought. If you are wedded to this image then my main suggestion is to flip the image whenever it would be upside down. This might create some weird effects on roads that are almost vertical as it changes from 89 degrees to 91 degrees, but maybe if the car image flips only at 85 degrees and 95 degrees rather than a hard line at 90 degrees (which is true vertical) you'd lose the oscillating back and forth on near vertical roads. You might also remove the ground shadow from the car image. If you're not wedded to a car image, then you could use the generic GPS "you" image (see attached). TEMPS screen - CAN bus analysis required

A question on tmc reminded me we need to look into this. Anyone out there with a can bus analyzer and some time? It appears (we can only guess from looking at CAN bus messages) that the VDS tells the VMS what it is interested in, and from that point on the VMS broadcasts the interested messages on the can bus. So, calling up the temperature screen on the VDS makes the VMS start transmitting temperature messages. If you never call up that screen, the messages are never sent. You fixed it yourself ;-) How long does the VMS keep sending? Indefinitely, from what I can tell. there must be some 'deep sleep' event that would cause it to stop, but mine is certainly being sent and it has been months since I called up that screen. It would be nice to be able to 'spoof' that message to say the VDS is looking at the temperature screen, but so far we don't have enough information on those messages to know for sure what they mean. [I]I really don't like transmitting messages on the can bus if we don't know with 100% certainty what they do.[/I] If anyone wants to help out with this analysis, please do. The messages appear to be on can id 0x102, B1=0x06. Tried to send the 102,06,D0,07,00,00,01,80,00 message, and that appeared to start id#100 B1=A3 temperature message transmission. Reproducing this is easy. Get a car that is _not_ sending temperature messages (id 0x100 B1=0xA3). Call up the temperature screen on the vds and magically see the temperature messages start to appear on the can bus. Now, work out which can bus message sent from the VDS (id 0x102) caused those temperatures to start to be sent. Also, work out which can bus message can stop them... KML and the start of a web api

I've deployed today a new feature for the ovms_server. It has already been committed to github and is now running live on both the tmc and www servers. The feature is a web server running on port tcp/6868. The web server provides an api to the ovms system and allows remote clients to query it for data. The first api released is 'group'. It works like this: Issuing a web request for: http://tmc.openvehicles.com:6868/group?id=XXXXX will return a KML document with place markers for all the cars in the specified group. As an example, try: http://tmc.openvehicles.com:6868/group?id=DEMOCARS Or as an even more impressive example, try: http://maps.google.com/ (then put "http://tmc.openvehicles.com:6868/group?id=DEMOCARS" into the google maps search box) Note that google maps has a nasty caching issue with it that you can get around by adding a "&random=<somerandomnumber>" on to the end of the url (to stop it caching old data). You can try it with your own cars by defining a social group as parameter #11 of the ovms module in your car. You can only define one group per car, but many cars can belong to the same group. Fun for meet-ups. This is also useful if you want to publicise the location of your car. You should be able to create a google (or whatever) map on your web site, and pull-in the kml to show your car location and details. At the moment, this is basically workable, but needs some polishing. We want to get the base car image in from the apps, and show a nice little pop-up web page for the details (at the moment, it just shows speed and altitude, which is not very interesting).
