Netmanager priority issue solved

TL;DR: you need to pull my latest esp-idf changes. I've finally found & solved the strange priority changes for our netmanager task (i.e. being raised suddenly from origin 5 to 18/22): the bug was in the esp-idf posix threads mutex implementation. I had suspected the mutex priority inheritance for a while, so added a way to retrieve the internal mutex hold count for our task list. Using this I noticed the hold count would always & only raise by 2 whenever any kind of mongoose connection was closed. That lead me to checking the thread concurrency protection for mongoose mbufs, because every mongoose connection has two mbufs associated (rx & tx), each having a posix mutex. The bug was: posix mutexes were deleted after locking (taking) them. FreeRTOS mutexes must not be deleted while being taken, that breaks the priority inheritance (more precisely the disinheritance), with the visible effect being the mutex hold count not returning to zero. As a side effect, this may also solve the strange event task starvations (hope so…). I was investigating this as I suspected some busy loop in the netmanager context. With the netman running at prio 22, that would effectively block almost all other processing including the timer service. I've found & fixed one potential busy loop trigger in the netman that would have been caused by the netman task still running while all interfaces had been lost -- not sure if that could happen, but it would explain the effects. SIM7600 Registration Denied

I’ve been fighting a problem for the past few months with registration getting denied on T-Mobile in USA using Hologram and our new 4G SIM7600G modem. Without cellular connectivity at home, it hasn’t been easy to recreate this, but I found a solution: Finally, with a good high gain antenna on my external wall facing the nearest cellular tower a couple of km away, I can get cellular (and even GPS with the little black puck) connectivity. So back to the two issues we are having: The FPLMN blacklist in the modem lists a bunch of cellular networks we are blocked from connecting to (including the ones we need). There have been reports that the connection to hologram works and is maintained, but the OVMS never connects to the v2 server. To address #1, I have extended the “cellular cmd” command to try to capture the output from the modem. There is no simple way of knowing when the command has completed, so for the moment I just look at data returned from the modem on the command channel, and stop when it hasn’t changed for a second or so. It seems to work well, but I still need to test it wider (especially over v2 protocol commands, where I think we might have a recursion problem). So on to issue #2 that has been much harder to find. Finally, working with Hologram, I discovered that the problem seems to be in our handling of CREG network registration messages. I found a module with this problem, and manually issuing commands I found: AT+CREG? Registration Denied AT+CGREG? Registration Denied AT+CEREG? Registered Roaming It seems that the E-UTRANS (some 4G LTE carriers) won’t show the registration status correctly in AT+CREG. I guess they are refusing GSM (3G) connections from us (aka ‘Registration Denied’) while allowing 4G LTE. But as we only use the AT+CREG status to know whether we are connected to the network, the result is we can’t detect the E-UTRANS LTE connection and think registration has been denied. Connected to Hologram, but no data (or v2 server) connection. I did some research, and can’t find a definitive answer to how best to do this (especially as we have both 3G and 4G options, still support 2G, and a lot seems to depend on the individual cellular carrier options). So I implemented it as best I could. I re-ordered the registration statuses to be in lowest priority order, then created m_netreg_d[3] to store the registration status for each of the three types. Finally, I changed it so that m_netreg reflects the highest registration status. That way if CREG says RegistrationDenied, and CEREG says RegisteredRoaming, I treat it as RegisteredRoaming. This seems to work (on my test bench at least), and I now plan to deploy for wider testing. Code is committed and built as 3.3.002-45-g42546636 on the main firmware site. Fiat500e Quirks

Howdy there, I recently got an OVMS set up with my Fiat 500e and was happy to see that it works, but I noticed noticed a few oddities. The first one is that it uses Valet Mode (CommandActivateValet) for preconditioning instead of CommandClimateControl: https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Monitoring-System-3/blob/bd192… <https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Monitoring-System-3/blob/bd192…> Is there a downside to changing the code to where it uses Climate Control instead? It seems like that would fit better with the intended functionality. The other is that it seems to rapidly generate spurious charging / not charging events, which en masse seems to make the websocket connection on the web server time out. I can put together a pull request to try to fix these issues, but was wondering if there are any thoughts on these two things before getting started. There's also no pictures of the Fiat on the iOS App, but I assume that's because the last release of the iOS App predates support. Thanks, William Reading

Android App beta

Everyone, I'm currently working on the next Android release including KustomWidget support and a native app widget based on the old Automagic gauge widget. Automagic has been dead for some time now, and it keeps crashing on Androids >= 7. IOS app reported GSM signal strength

I've noticed for awhile but never asked the question; why does the IOS app report wifi signal strength when I'm connected to wifi as gsm signal strength? I would expect gsm to always be gsm and maybe wifi would also be shown (and identified as such) when present. Note that I run my modules in wifi client-only mode. Craig

OVMS Power Drain?

Hi All, I have just had a bit of a painful experience with my 12V being drained (twice). I'm guessing it's related to OVMS, but also something seems to have happened as it was running file for a week! For some reason, the 12V battery graphs aren't working in the (android) App.. which means I'm not quite sure of the timelines, however it was most likely overnight. This morning my 12V was severely depleted (like 6v!). (Oh, it could be because I don't have the app running in the background). I'm assuming it's likely not to be the direct drain of the device itself, but maybe something it is querying on the CAN busses or something that is then causing a consequential power drain? I got road-side assist out and they got me going, but then 20mins later it was flat again! (I did see an alert in the APP and so was quick to go out, but was unsuccessful in getting the car going before it died!). I'm going to unplug it and see if that stops the card from dying. Also, I might leave the car on for a bit longer.. but still I have concerns! Also I haven't started using 'write' commands yet. Any ideas? //.ichael

Hi, Why not use the internal 12V sensor to detect, if the car is on? If it's below some threshold and and we receive no CAN responses from ECUs which are only on, if the car is really on, we could stop the polling completely. Not processing canbus frames anymore

I have a v3.3 module in my Corvette and recently got it back on the road but I find that following the sim7600 modem testing I did a few weeks ago, it doesn't seem to be processing canbus frames. When the car is running, the module does not appear to update soc or vin although this used to work. Getting up-to-speed on Ioniq 5 - Newb help on obdii commands

Hi all, I have got my OVMS device (no SIM yet, but I'm working on that), and have been connecting and playing round with commands. I'm starting to get my head around things. I have being mucking round with SavvyCan and now understand a little the ISO-TP protocol stuff happening on top of the standard can bus now. SavvyCan seems to like disconnecting from the TCP server, but going via a COM emulator seems to work better (and can be restarted). All very weird, but I can cope with that. I'm getting a weird response from the following when it responds (VIN): obdii can1 request broadcast 0902 It contains elements of my actual VIN but not the main number at the end. I'm wondering if this is an OBDII receive issue? Does this command work for other people to get the actual VIN? Also it seems to only work in certain circumstances (?when the car is on?).. which is "fun". I have also had issues where if I use the "Set Car to NONE" on the RE PID Scanner interface, it seems to stop communications.. and obdii command set no longer works - even if I restart the CAN bus. Setting the vehicle back to 'KO' seems to fix things. //.ichael Geddes

Fwd: Anyone working on Ioniq 5?

Hi, I have an Australian Hyundai Ioniq 5 (no BlueLink or HUD in the current versions). I'm also a developer; have mucked round with some hardware stuff, but it's been a bit. I'm looking at whether it's worth attempting to use OVMS on my Ioniq 5. Has anybody already started on this? The idea of providing mapped OBD commands through to a HUD is definitely appealing, as would be getting charge status stats remotely. If I were to start, which cable would I be best to get? Is it left or right that I need? The port is to the right of my right-hand-drive steering wheel. At least I'm pretty sure that's the OBD2 port. I'm new to ODB so not even sure how to recognise OBD vs OBD2! What I know: The old Hyundai Ioniq is a model that has EV, ICE, Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid versions. The Ioniq 5 (and Ioniq 6, 7 etc) are part of a sub-brand based on E-GMP EV platform that is also shared by the Kia EV6. So I don't know whether the old Ioniq or Kona would be a good start. Skills: * C/C++ (though I'm currently using Delphi), so happy to with different 'real' languages. * I could solder up a lead or circuit board, but wouldn't be able to design a circuit board. * I've dealt with software on a custom embedded controller (albeit in Forth + Forth assembly) Any advice on this? I have older kids; the youngest is about to finish High School - so a new hobby might be a good thing to have :). Pointers to good introduction to ODB2 and the Ioniq 5 specifics if anybody has them would be welcome! //.ichael
