I’ve built a firmware for 2.8.1. This includes all the changes since March 2014. Quite a few minor bug fixes and improvements. Most noticeable new work is parameter #0x16, GPRSDNS. This can be configured as the fourth parameter to the GPRS command, and specifies the DNS server. It seems that the gprs protocol allows the mobile providers to push DNS server IPs to us, and the SIM908 recognises and stores those. But, for those providers that don’t support that, this parameter allows it to be explicitly set. We can now use DNS names (tmc.openvehicles.com <http://tmc.openvehicles.com/>), instead of IP addresses, for the Server IP parameter. This is a much better way of doing it. I’ve also changed the COPS mechanism around a bit, to try to make it work better in marginal network conditions. In particular, in my garage ;-) The new logic is to wait for up to 5 minutes, after COPS fails, to see if we can get a network registration anyway. If we can, we continue with GPRS. If we can’t we try COPS again. This is a release candidate now. Regards, Mark.

Attn: OVMS user of tmc.openvehicles.com <http://tmc.openvehicles.com/> Short Story The Server IP address for tmc.openvehicles.com <http://tmc.openvehicles.com/> has been changed, and the OVMS module ServerIP setting in your car needs to be changed to match. The new server IP is 54.197.255.127 (the old was 54.243.136.230). If your OVMS module is currently connected to the server, we’ll do this change automatically for you, and there is nothing further you need to do. However, if your car is currently offline, then you may have to manually change this yourself (as we can’t change it remotely for offline cars). Long Story The server IP address for tmc.openvehicles.com <http://tmc.openvehicles.com/> has been changed. For cars currently connected to the server, or connecting within the next 24 hours, we will conduct a migration of parameter #4 automatically, so you don’t need to do anything: #4 SERVERIP 54.243.136.230 -> 54.197.255.127 For those using the tmc.openvehicles.com <http://tmc.openvehicles.com/> server, whose cars are not currently connected, you will need to manually change the parameter #4 (SERVERIP) to the new address 54.197.255.127. You can do that with the ‘SERVER 54.197.255.127’ sms message from your registered phone. iOS 8.4

A lot has changed in iOS 8, and it seems to have broken push notifications (APNS) for new users. Existing users are fine. So, I find the few lines that need to be changed, and fixed that. Cool. Now, submit to App Store, and Apple requires 64bit. OK, change the building settings for a 32bit + 64bit dual package, and rebuild. (old) Testflight sdk not compatible (32bit only). Remove testflight sdk, and all its tendrils throughout the code base. Rebuild. 190+ warnings about int vs long. Crap de crap de crap. Rebuild. OK. All clean, built and ready to go. Only issue is that all my working devices are IOS 9 beta (for work), and Apple’s not accepting iOS 9 built stuff yet, so I can’t properly test. Each of the above steps needs about 15-to-45 minutes of googling. So, I have a build (v1.6.6). It is 32bit and 64bit. It seems to work. But, I need help testing. Seems Apple have a new test flight integrated to iTunes connect. Never tried it, but you are all about to get an invite ;-) Regards, Mark.

Broken pipes

sourcing SIM908 in China

Hi, I'm working on a project using the same SIM908 module as the OVMS, and we're trying to reduce cost. I'm wondering if by chance anyone here knows a good place to look. One of my co-workers says she found a supplier offering the SIM908 for $11.50 for qty 225. Ideally looking for something under $10/ea. Also, if anyone knows a similar SIMCOM module with GSM+GPS but maybe fewer features (e.g. dual-band instead of quad-band?), that could possibly work for us as a lower-cost option. Registered phone / password security issue

Hi everyone, some users including me experienced loss or garbling of eeprom parameters. I once saw by chance that my registered phone number had turned empty -- I seldom need to use SMS, so I only saw this when checking the parameter list on the App for another config. The same now also occured to another user I'm in contact with, and it now turned out that's not only annoying but a security issue: The current logic of net_sms_checkcaller() allows access to any phone number if the parameter is empty. The same applies to net_sms_checkpassarg(), which will allow any password to be used if no password is stored. As this kind of data loss can only be detected by checking the parameters, it's possible to check for "open" modules by just trying to access them from time to time -- you only need to know the SIM card number. I'm about to submit a change for both functions to NOT allow access if their respective param slots are empty. As the initial flash contents has the "OVMS" standard password, a completely lost module should still be restorable by re-flashing. Do I miss something?
