Hi, I offered my help a few months ago to translate the app into French. Has the app now reached a state where localization into other languages can be considered? Denis. Here are some stats, from the Android app (google play store version), based on Active installs (trying to remove the install-once-to-see-what-it-is crowd): YOUR APP English (United States) 42.50% English (United Kingdom) 8.75% German (Germany) 8.33% Norwegian (Norway) 6.67% Dutch (Netherlands) 5.00% French (France) 3.75% German (Switzerland) 2.92% Spanish (Spain) 2.50% English (Canada) 1.67% Others 17.92% YOUR APP United States 37.08% Germany 8.33% Norway 7.92% Netherlands 5.00% Switzerland 4.58% Canada 4.17% India 2.50% Spain 2.08% United Kingdom 2.08% Others 26.25% Pretty much matches what I thought - the Tesla Roadster, plus dutch Twizzy populations :-). I guess most of the swiss users are German speaking? I'm happy to look at translations for the top languages - English, German, Norwegian, Dutch and French. Probably a dumb question, but: Would those be useful for people? Is it good to have it appear in your own language, or do you prefer the english version? If it is useful, can we get some people to step forward to do the translations? One for each language. From my understanding, we produce a list of all the strings in the application, and you just have to translate it to a local language equivalent. Regards, Mark. Denis, I did a quick review, and the strings seem to be correctly put in the resource file. I don't see any hard-coded. Attached is the strings.xml. I hope it is self-explanatory. If others can step forward for German, Norwegian and Dutch, that would be helpful. Please let us know you 'grab it', here, to avoid duplication of effort.

Mark, In addition to my previous message, I parsed the source files on github. I am no java developer, but I think following strings need to be made localizable too: In src / com / openvehicles / OVMS / api / ApiTask.java 337 mCarData.car_speed_units = (mCarData.car_distance_units_raw.equals("M"))?"mph":"kph"; // kph should be localizable (km/h for example) 573 mCarData.car_tpms_fl_p = String.format("%.1f%s",mCarData.car_tpms_fl_p_raw, "psi"); 574 mCarData.car_tpms_fr_p = String.format("%.1f%s",mCarData.car_tpms_fr_p_raw, "psi"); 575 mCarData.car_tpms_rl_p = String.format("%.1f%s",mCarData.car_tpms_rl_p_raw, "psi"); 576 mCarData.car_tpms_rr_p = String.format("%.1f%s",mCarData.car_tpms_rr_p_raw, "psi"); // kPa should be used (and conversion performed) when metric units are selected, instead of psi. If there is such a mechanism, it should be added in OVMSNotifications.java in functions such as public void addNotification(String title, String message) Then, the list of the notifications that can potentially be send from the module would be needed to add the corresponding translations to the translations resources file. PS: Sorry, I just saw the messages from today, and that you already worked on it, but I think there are still some Ive listed above that are still missing. Denis. Mark, Thank you for the APK. I ironed out some translations, and attached the new version of the French translation file. I found some strings that seem not localizable and are probably hard-coded: Demonstration Car live just now kph CHARGING SLIDE TO CHARGE Valet Mode Activated Valet Mode Deactivated Vehicle Locked Vehicle Unlocked Vehicle Awake Push Notifications Push notifications received for your registered vehicles are archived here. Command unenplemented Module Rebooted and the strings displayed beside the parking and the antenna symbol (, x min, x hours, etc) Tires pressure seems to be hard-coded in psi. Here we use kPa. Can this be changed in the app? Denis.

2013/5/11 Mark Webb-Johnson <mark@webb-johnson.net> Denis,
Thanks for finding these. It was quite a bit of work, but I've put most of them into the strings.xml file. I've pushed that to github, but for simplicity it may be easier if you guys can just translate these few new ones:
<string name="live">live</string> <string name="ndays">%d days</string> <string name="nhours">%d hours</string> <string name="nmins">%d mins</string> <string name="min1">1 min</string> <string name="justnow">just now</string> <string name="mph">mph</string> <string name="kph">kph</string> <string name="slidetocharge">SLIDE TO\nCHARGE</string> <string name="timedcharge">TIMED CHARGE</string> <string name="pushnotifications">Push Notifications</string> <string name="pushnotifications_welcome">Push notifications received for your registered vehicles are archived here.</string> <string formatted="false" name="charging">CHARGING\n%s %s</string>
We will need these in Norwegian, Dutch, French and German.
Note that some of the other messages you have seen are command responses from the car module, and are in English because that is all the car module knows. It would be another project to translate those!

I ironed out some translations, and attached the new version of the French translation file.
I found some strings that seem not localizable and are probably hard-coded: “Demonstration Car” “live” “just now” “kph” “CHARGING” “SLIDE TO CHARGE” “Valet Mode Activated” “Valet Mode Deactivated” “Vehicle Locked” “Vehicle Unlocked” “Vehicle Awake” “Push Notifications” “Push notifications received for your registered vehicles are archived here.” “Command unenplemented” “Module Rebooted” and the strings displayed beside the parking and the antenna symbol (, “x min”, “x hours”, etc)
Tires pressure seems to be hard-coded in psi. Here we use kPa. Can this be changed in the app?

Denis,
You can try from:
http://www.openvehicles.com/downloads/OVMS.3.1.3.beta1.apk
Your translations seem fine, and come up in the App perfectly. The only change I had to make was that apostrophes (') need to be escaped (\'). I've committed to github, so you can see the revisions there (as you point out res/values-fr/strings.xml).
Thanks, Mark.

Denis. The only change I had to make was that apostrophes (') need to be escaped (\'). I've committed to github, so you can see the revisions there (as you point out res/values-fr/strings.xml). I did the translation into French, the values-fr\strings.xml is attached. I also attached a French app description, for Play Store submission. Following thoughts : - Many things require much more words in French than in English, so I translated the app name as OVMS. - This is my first Android translation, but I did many in the past on the now defunct webOS platform, and experience told me that translations need to be checked in their context in the app. So Id like to test my translations within the app to be able to correct some of them if they are wrong or dont display well in their captions. Could you send me an APK so I can test the translations? - I made the assumption: Wakeup Car = Preheating/cooling of the cabin (would make sense on my Ampera, but I dont know what it does on the Tesla Roadster) Denis. I don't see any hard-coded. Attached is the strings.xml. I hope it is self-explanatory. Only about 120 to translate. If others can step forward for German, Norwegian and Dutch, that would be helpful. Please let us know you 'grab it', here, to avoid duplication of effort. Regards, Mark. P.S. Description of the Android localisation process is here: <http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/localization.html> http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/localization.html P.P.S. I look forward to seeing the translations for the first string "<string name="app_name">Open Vehicle</string>" :-) <AppStore Description.txt><strings.xml>_______________________________________________ OvmsDev mailing list <mailto:OvmsDev@lists.teslaclub.hk> OvmsDev@lists.teslaclub.hk <http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev> http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev <strings.xml>_______________________________________________ OvmsDev mailing list <mailto:OvmsDev@lists.teslaclub.hk> OvmsDev@lists.teslaclub.hk <http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev> http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev _______________________________________________ OvmsDev mailing list OvmsDev@lists.teslaclub.hk http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev
