UI redesign in Android App - Needs beta testing
Hi Android users. I’ve recently redesigned UI for Android and it would need some testing. Here is the latest build available for UI redesign: https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Android/tree/test-dfj-ui/latest Please report any issues, improvement suggestions, etc. Thank you! Br, DFJ
Thanks for the update. In general I like the new design. I've attached a screen shot. The list box items need to resize for larger fonts to stop them being all cut off. Also where does the "Unknown Vehicle model" come from? I have a slightly larger font setting: Also here: ..where the labels are overlapping due to the font size. And the ... here: I'm also getting a crash when opening the settings on the map. (App disappears. First time it prompted to clear cache which I did) Is there a new widget? If I click on the widget I see the old UI. //.ichael On Mon, 30 Dec 2024, 07:28 Developer From Jokela via OvmsDev, < ovmsdev@lists.openvehicles.com> wrote:

Also many thanks for the effort. The new design is not my cup of tea, but that is question of personal liking I suppose. For me the menu is far to present, whereas the information of the vehicle seems barely visible. For the e-Up the climate control throws an error. "Fehler bei der Kommandoausführung". Kind regards Chris Am Montag, dem 30.12.2024 um 15:20 +0800 schrieb Michael Geddes via OvmsDev:

I like the design of the Mercedes Ne app. Don't need a one to one copy, but it has a good mixture between info and links, I think. Am 30. Dezember 2024 11:29:37 MEZ schrieb Developer From Jokela <info@developerfromjokela.com>:

Looking good! No crashes when charging Shows as Ioniq 5 The widget starts the app correctly. One thing I found was in the Push Notifications/ command area: Portrait mode: Note the really big boxes. This is because the date column is squished to a couple of pixels and it is displaying it wrapped downwards. Looks fine in landscape mode //.ichael On Tue, 31 Dec 2024, 15:47 Michael Geddes, <frog@bunyip.wheelycreek.net> wrote:

Everyone, I've merged the UI redesign into `master`. I've been using this for 3 weeks now without issues, but I can only test my vehicle (VW e-Up), and I still can only test the pure OBD installation on that one. Please install the latest build (https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Android/tree/master/latest) and test for issues with your vehicle types & configurations. A big "thank you" to DFJ (Developer From Jokela), impressive work! Regards, Michael Am 09.01.25 um 08:33 schrieb Michael Geddes via OvmsDev:

Hey Michael, I installed the new version and things seem basicly to work for me so far. Our e-UP is connected via ODB and T26A. Climate control ist working. What I'm missing is a response that the climate control message is accepted. The end result with red arrows layer over the car looks nice, but I would prefer a two step approach. 1. message accepted, 2. result OK (the red arrows). The situation on the wake up button is simmilar. I get no visual response, if the wake up is working (like making the text bold in the old UI). The two "home link" buttons on the vehicle screen look lost and mess up the design (the icons look very different). I only have room for 5 buttons on a row and due to the two home link buttons we have six and therefor a second row with only one button on it. Not that pretty ... So far my first impressions. I've merged the UI redesign into `master`. I've been using this for 3 weeks now without issues, but I can only test my vehicle (VW e-Up), and I still can only test the pure OBD installation on that one.
Please install the latest build (https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Android/tree/master/latest ) and test for issues with your vehicle types & configurations.

One thing I found was in the Push Notifications/ command area: Portrait mode:
Note the really big boxes. This is because the date column is squished to a couple of pixels and it is displaying it wrapped downwards.
Looks fine in landscape mode

For some reason when I click on the widget it opens the old look ovms still... is the old look still hidden somewhere?
Also if I start charging my car (not through the app), then whenever I switch to or open the app, the app crashes.
I'm just doing ac charging from a wallbox.

Chris, the current feedback of the command being successful is the progress display on the button disappears without an error toast. But you're right, that can easily be missed, especially with a fast connection. An explicit success feedback would be better. Regarding the "two homelink buttons", I assume you mean the quick actions on the home screen. Those are just the defaults, click long on the buttons to customize. From the beginning on I saw, that the "running as service" dot did not appear on the app icon and that the connection of other apps (my KWGT widget and my fireplace app) did not work (I did set the settings for that features).
In the last days I saw that the app sometimes didn't want to connect to the server. Changing the view from "vehicle" to i.e. "settings" did bring the connection back. Today I had a complete breakdown of the app. No connection to the server possible at all anymore. Deleting the cash did not help. Uninstall and reinstall of the "old" app brought back the connection. So I'm back to the old app for now. Regards Chris Am Sonntag, dem 02.02.2025 um 13:05 +0100 schrieb Chris van der Meijden via OvmsDev:

Chris,
the current feedback of the command being successful is the progress display on the button disappears without an error toast. But you're right, that can easily be missed, especially with a fast connection. An explicit success feedback would be better.
Regarding the "two homelink buttons", I assume you mean the quick actions on the home screen. Those are just the defaults, click long on the buttons to customize.

Hey Michael,
I installed the new version and things seem basicly to work for me so far.

A big "thank you" to DFJ (Developer From Jokela), impressive work!

I'm just doing ac charging from a wallbox.

Also many thanks for the effort. The new design is not my cup of tea, but that is question of personal liking I suppose. For me the menu is far to present, whereas the information of the vehicle seems barely visible.
For the e-Up the climate control throws an error. "Fehler bei der Kommandoausführung".

Thanks for the update. In general I like the new design.
I've attached a screen shot. The list box items need to resize for larger fonts to stop them being all cut off.
Also where does the "Unknown Vehicle model" come from?
<1000012000.jpg>
I have a slightly larger font setting:
<1000012001.jpg>
Also here:
<1000012002.jpg>
..where the labels are overlapping due to the font size.
And the ... here:
<1000012003.jpg>
I'm also getting a crash when opening the settings on the map. (App disappears. First time it prompted to clear cache which I did)
Is there a new widget? If I click on the widget I see the old UI.

The "Battery history" chart is a Twizy specific feature, it's a battery cell state chart like the battery monitor in the web UI. It's currently bound to the wrong button though: the button "Energy statistics" should open another Twizy specific chart displaying power levels & energy usage over time. That chart doesn't seem to be available now… and currently the App immediately crashes after selecting a Twizy profile. And keeps crashing, see below. With actual data, the charts look like the example screen shots 2 & 3: https://dexters-web.de/faq#waskann Both charts could get supported generally, with some modifications. They currently need the Twizy specific historical data records (RT-BAT-P, RT-BAT-C, RT-PWR-Stats). The main issue is finding a suitable generalization for these.
