Module stops working after couple of days
Hi, About a week ago I was able to install the module and get my own server up and running. Everything seemed to work fine from the beginning, but after about 36 hours the module died. First I thought my prepaid SIM-card had ran out of credits, but that was not the case. A manual reboot of the module was needed and it started working again. Yesterday I opened the app and saw "Last update 8 hours ago" Again, a reboot of the module was enough. I checked the LED's and the first time GREEN was solid ON and RED was flashing slowly, that is normal. The second time the GREEN LED was off and only the RED one was blinking. I don't think it's a problem of GSM reception, the module even worked without the antenna while lying on the floor of the car. GSM reception is however very good here in the neighborhood, no high buildings and it's a very dense network. It's also weird that the module doesn't come back online. If it was a short disruption it could be a connection problem, but being offline for 8 hours is long. Has anyone seen this behavior? Thanks, Wido
Wido, Green off is definitely strange. I suggest you to try reflashing the firmware to rule out a bad flash. If it still drops out, try sending STAT via SMS. What version of the car firmware are you running? If the 1.2.0-rc? series, please ensure the switch on the PIC board is set to the GRPS position (not GSM only). Can you also try the main www.openvehicles.com server to see if the same problem happens? This does remind me of problems we had many months ago with the modem losing signal lock but that not being able to be picked up by the module. But, I haven't seen it for many months. Regards, Mark. Wido, The only recent change to the modem handling code was in 1.2.0-rc5 - to handle multi-line sms messages and to increase the size of the network buffers. If this problem is repeatable for you, could you try rolling back to 1.2.0-rc4 and see if that solves it? The git revision number is 1bb3ef4ec1df41a9b54a87c4c08918f76b5ade08. Regards, Mark. This is a bit concerning. The GPRS link is rock-solid in my car, but we did have that multi-line SMS change which seems ok but could cause something like this. Please keep us informed as to anything you find. We were going to cut the official v1.2.0 firmware this weekend, but it looks like it would be best to hold-off for a few days until we know more about this issue. Regards, Mark. I reviewed the code, and can't really see how the multi-line SMS change could have changed this. But, there is one possible loop-hole in that if the simcom modem tells us "here is 100 bytes of SMS/IP data", then never sends us the 100 bytes, we could wait forever. This is the same for both SMS and IP data. I added a 60second timeout for the SMS and IPD net_buf_mode statuses, to cope with this occurrence. 60 seconds is crazily long, and should never happen, but the code is there if it ever does. The timeout will go back to AT+COPS modem reset. I also changed the SMS notifications to only show charging status if the charge port door is open, as previously discussed. I cut this as v1.2.0, and committed to github. I'm running it in my car and will do final tests tomorrow to make sure everything still works as expected. Hi, I just started my tablet and wanted to check on the Roadster: "Updated: 9hrs ago" To verify if the module was still working I sent "STAT" via SMS, within a minute I had a response from the module. It seems that the module is still alive, but it won't do GPRS? I currently do have access to the car as it's not parked at my house, but as soon as I get to the car I'll check which LED's are ON/OFF. I added a 60second timeout for the SMS and IPD net_buf_mode statuses, to cope with this occurrence. 60 seconds is crazily long, and should never happen, but the code is there if it ever does. The timeout will go back to AT+COPS modem reset.
I also changed the SMS notifications to only show charging status if the charge port door is open, as previously discussed.
I cut this as v1.2.0, and committed to github. I'm running it in my car and will do final tests tomorrow to make sure everything still works as expected.
Feedback appreciated (especially for this strange non-response problem).

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm a bit busy the last days. In the server I checked the ovms_cars and ovms_carmessages tables, they don't get updated (the timestamps). Sometimes the GPRS link simply seems to die from the module and some time later it will start responding again. Still waiting for the new SIM-card so we can try a different network.
A quick check would be to connect you to our server. Just let me have your openvehicles.com user id, vehicleid and network pass.

Wido, Some very old versions of the server code didn't time-out the cars without activity. That is why I was asking about the logs. Sorry for the delayed response. I'm a bit busy the last days.
In the server I checked the ovms_cars and ovms_carmessages tables, they don't get updated (the timestamps).
Sometimes the GPRS link simply seems to die from the module and some time later it will start responding again.
Still waiting for the new SIM-card so we can try a different network.
A quick check would be to connect you to our server. Just let me have your openvehicles.com user id, vehicleid and network pass.
I sent these a couple of weeks ago. I'll resend them.
