The CINCH case is lovely and it looks as if it would be pretty easy to produce hardware that is compatible with OVMS/GEVCU and bring out GPS, GSM, and WiFi antennas on the rear panel leaving the exiting 30 pin connector for I/O. Bluetooth would use an internal antenna. I¹ll ask my colleagues to investigate the possibility of porting the OVMS software to the AT915AM3X8E used on the Arduino DUE. I¹ll also look into realistic build costs for the hardware. While there is some synergy between the two projects, when I looked at GEVCU v2 last year, my three biggest concerns were: 1. I/O: GEVCU was more about digital I/O and PWM, while OVMS needs a bunch of different comms options (mostly async). 2. 3. 4. Price: GEVCU retails for US$595 (vs US$99 for OVMS v2). 5. 6. 7. Power consumption: In general, units like GEVCU are designed to be on when the car is driving or charging, and off at other times. Doing telematics separately seems a sensible approach. I was wondering about a hybrid approach. Some of the GSM units (like the SIMCOM OVMS uses) can run user programs alongside the traditional modem and have I/O. All the telematics could run on such a processor (always on) and an I/O line could be used to wake up the GEVCU if required. But, such an arrangement would be far from trivial and a stretch for a hobbyist approach. A dual-processor, dual-firmware, system is much more complex to maintain and keep up-to-date. Regarding full linux boxes (like raspberry pi, beagle bone, etc), my concern is power consumption. It would be wonderful to have a linux base, but the overhead is horrendous. Regards, Mark. Hi Rob,
I¹ll send a complete GEVCU 5 hardware list when I get a moment. It¹s based on a Arduino Due architecture with a 84Mhz 32-bit microcontroller :-)
Here¹s a link to the enclosure which is IP67/69 (submersible!)

Hi Kevin,
It seems sensible to assess the opportunity.
If someone more informed than me can list the relative features, potential and cost of the two units then that would put us in a better position to comment.
Regards, Rob

Version 5 of the Generalised Electric Vehicle Control Unit (GEVCU) will include BT, WiFi, and isolated I/O in a low cost and rugged automotive enclosure. Many of the things on my OVMS wish list!
GEVCU development is progressing well and I¹ve suggested they add GPS as an option in the final version;

Would their be any interest in porting OVMS to the GEVCU hardware? Or even in merging the projects possibly?
I ask this because the more resources we can bring to the project the more likely it is to flourish.
