Mark, Fair point on the diag port being more of a 'power user' input. Regarding the SIM card, I was not able to get the card to register on the AT&T or T-mobile networks using my unlocked quad band phone. The registration timed out. It may in fact be my SIM. And no, the GSM lock is not set on the module. I was able to get some output using the 'diag' command. The signal strength bounces between 0 and 24 every few minutes. I think the diag port is not something a normal user should be confronted with. The OVMS setup and troubleshooting is already quite complex for a simple user. If you're able to use a serial port, you're able to find and read the tech docs -- just my 2 cents.
Now for your trace: is a GSM lock configured (parameter #13)? If so, try without.
Also, does the SIM work correctly in a mobile phone?

I managed to get serial access to the OVMS board, and it looks like the data call is repeatedly failing. I verified that my GeoSIM card has $15 balance on it. Is my SIM card screwed up? I activated the SIM on the GeoSIM site, and I think it's set up ok.
