If you ever need to test your connection to anything (web/smtp/databases etc) try using a telnet client (an installable feature on windows)

telnet <hostname> <port>

If you get a timeout then the host or port is not accessible to you (firewalled). A blank screen on the other hand indicates a successful connection.
