Thanks, I do already do that.

I have a the following states:

0 - car asleep
1 - car awake, but not charging or ready-to-drive / driving
2 - car ready to drive or driving
3 - car charging.

I change the poll frequencies in the different modes as seemed appropriate.

You can also use the Poll State feature to manage different poll requests, ie automatically turning off requests when the bus is not alive then when the bus comes alive changing state to request the PIDs at a set frequency.  Take a look at the Nissan Leaf code by way of example, other cars use this approach also.
