Competition +1 !

<monday 'lost it' mode>
Again, in France: Free Mobile (Free for Liberty, not as in Beer :-) ) is, well, almost Free !
They’re barely settling in and building their 3G/4GLTE network and don’t have a 2G network, so they cut a deal with Orange (1bn€/year minimum) to have access as an MVNO to the 2G spectrum.
Most native cells have been converted from 3G to 3G+LTE overnight (thanks SDR and good equipment) though LTE is harder to penetrate, bandwidth is pretty good now (>50Mbs in goodish conditions)

Two offers: 20€/month, 3GB/month (20GB on LTE) + unlimited calls/texts to a big part of the worlds landlines, mobiles, and so… (4€ rebate if ADSL/fiber subscriber = 16€)

And: the best: 2€/month (free if subscriber): 2h of calls (dirt cheap beyond), unlimited texts, 50MB/month of data: that’s it, 50MB/month! a no-brainer !

They don’t « allow » use in anything else than a phone, but the fine print (and some ppl I know) actually says that if it’s « humanly triggered exchanges » it’s ok, which is nearly the case :-)

So it’s 2€ or 0€/month for the OVMS… Come’on, bring over your Tesla’s, Free’s owner has his, saw him a few weeks in it, we smiled at each other (yeah, Twizy glamour) :) forget about the recent .eu election results, we still have good food and we have the original grapes that grow in Napa :)

Bottom line:
Would a double-stack GSM+UNB (ultra narrow band) radio system be good?

Mark, any way you could build a density map of ovms modules? I wonder if we’re getting anything close to the critical mass needed to build an alternative ‘mesh' network (and/or on the principle of what SigFox is doing on the 869MHz spectrum with a 20$ radio modem and a handful of base stations)

regards

JaXX./.
