[Ovmsdev] GEVCU 5 hardware

Kevin,

Do you have anything on target pricing for GEVCU v3?

While there is some synergy between the two projects, when I looked at GEVCU v2 last year, my three biggest concerns were:

I/O: GEVCU was more about digital I/O and PWM, while OVMS needs a bunch of different comms options (mostly async).

Price: GEVCU retails for US$595 (vs US$99 for OVMS v2).

Power consumption: In general, units like GEVCU are designed to be on when the car is driving or charging, and off at other times. Doing telematics separately seems a sensible approach.

I was wondering about a hybrid approach. Some of the GSM units (like the SIMCOM OVMS uses) can run user programs alongside the traditional modem and have I/O. All the telematics could run on such a processor (always on) and an I/O line could be used to wake up the GEVCU if required. But, such an arrangement would be far from trivial and a stretch for a hobbyist approach. A dual-processor, dual-firmware, system is much more complex to maintain and keep up-to-date.

Regarding full linux boxes (like raspberry pi, beagle bone, etc), my concern is power consumption. It would be wonderful to have a linux base, but the overhead is horrendous.
